Water is one of the most important factors to a healthy body. Our bodies are made up of 75% water, and the best way to guarantee healthy, clean drinking water for you and your family is through a water filter!

How Does a Water Filter Work?

Many Australians drinking water comes from a treated municipal supply, which can have unpleasant tastes and odours from added chemicals such as chlorine which are used to disinfect the water supply.

The Australian mains water supply also causes limescale which can block your pipes and damage your appliances. These problems can easily be fixed however through water filtration.

With several different water filtration solutions to choose from The Water Shop is here to help you make the best choice for your families needs.

Depending on what you are trying to remove or trying to stop all together, we have several different methods of water filtration available to suit any circumstance.

Mechanical Filtration

Mechanical filtration will remove sediment, dirt and particles in the water by using the water filter as a literal barrier.

Mechanical filters range from anything, like a basic mesh sediment filter to filter out large debris to our advanced ceramic filters which have an extremely complex tortoise like pore structure for ultra-fine filtration of pathogenic organisms.

The Micron rating of mechanical filters indicate how effective the filter will prove to be in terms of the size of the particles it is capable of removing.

A Common example of these ratings you might see include:

  • 5 micron – Will remove most particles visible to the naked eye.
  • 1 micron – Will remove particles which are too small to see without a microscope.
  • 0.5 micron – Will remove cysts (giardia and cryptosporidium).

Absorption Filtration

The Absorption filtration method in a water filter is commonly achieved by the carbon inside the filter which is highly effective at capturing water-borne contaminants. The reason carbon absorbs contaminants so well is due to it’s internal surface which traps chemical impurities such as chlorine through a labyrinth of chambers formed in the carbon.

A common, cheaper option to absorption in water filters is granular activated carbon (GAC) which will reduce bad tastes and odours.

A More expensive, but highly effective method in these filters is through the use of carbon block elements. This will allow for more effective absorption and also carries a micron rating for particle removal.

Reverse Osmosis Filtration

Reverse Osmosis (RO) utilizes state of the art technology in water purification. Of all the methods to purify drinking water for domestic use, the process of reverse osmosis is the most advanced, economical and effective.

The process of Reverse osmosis will remove dissolved inorganic solids (such as magnesium and calcium ions) from water by forcing it through a semipermeable membrane under pressure so that the water passes through but the contaminants are left behind. This method of filtration will combine a number of different filters such as a mechanical filters and absorption filters in order to return the water with a 99.99% contaminants removal rating.

The Water Shop’s Ultra High Purity Reverse Osmosis system offers a premium filtration, with easy maintenance and hygienic twist-off filtration cartridges.
