Traces of ‘forever chemicals’ found in Sydney’s water plants: levels safe by Australian standards but not U.S.

Sydney Water has confirmed the presence of small amounts of cancer causing chemicals, known as “forever chemicals.”. While the levels detected are within Australian safety guidelines for drinking water, it’s important to note that these levels do not meet the stricter standards set by the U.S. For example, the U.S. limits PFOS and PFHxS to a combined total of 0.07 micrograms per liter (µg/L) or 70 parts per trillion (ppt), and PFOA to less than 0.56 µg/L.

Despite this, Sydney Water has reassured residents that the water remains safe to drink. During routine water testing in June, perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) were identified at key filtration plants, including Warragamba, Prospect Reservoir, and Orchard Hills. Slightly higher levels were found in Cascade Dam in the Blue Mountains and North Richmond.

What are PFAS chemicals?

PFAS are often referred to as “forever chemicals” due to their resistance to breaking down in the environment. These synthetic chemicals are widely used in industrial applications for their ability to repel heat, stains, grease, and water. They are commonly found in products such as upholstery, paper coatings, cosmetics, and sunscreen.

The specific PFAS detected in Sydney’s water included perfluorooctane sulphonate (PFOS), perfluorohexane sulphonate (PFHxS), and perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA).

Is Sydney’s tap water safe to drink?

Although the detected levels of PFAS chemicals in Sydney’s water were within the thresholds set by Australian guidelines for safe drinking water, they fall short of U.S. standards. The National Health and Medical Research Council is currently reviewing these guidelines.

Where were PFAS chemicals detected?

The highest levels of PFAS chemicals were found at the Cascade water filtration plant in Katoomba. Lower levels were detected at the North Richmond, Prospect, Warragamba, and Orchard Hills filtration plants. No PFAS chemicals were found at the Woronora, Macarthur, Nepean, or Illawarra plants.

Do PFAS chemicals cause cancer?

According to the U.S. National Cancer Institute, large doses and specific contexts may increase cancer risk, but further studies are needed to establish clear links.

In Australia, research has highlighted the potential adverse effects of PFAS contamination on wildlife, such as the platypus, with studies showing links to liver damage, immune system damage, low birth weight, birth defects, delayed development, and newborn deaths in animal species.

We certainly would not be risking it.

How to eliminate PFAS from your tap water

Reverse Osmosis Systems

A reverse osmosis (RO) filtration system is among the most effective methods for removing PFAS from tap water. This system works by pushing water through a semi-permeable membrane, effectively filtering out contaminants, including PFAS. RO systems are highly efficient, capable of removing pollutants down to 0.0005 microns, making them an excellent option for ensuring your drinking water is clean and safe.

Carbon Filters

Another effective way to reduce PFAS in your water is by using carbon filters. These filters are specifically designed to remove a wide range of contaminants and can significantly lower PFAS levels and other harmful substances in your water. We offer a variety of under-sink and countertop carbon filter options to fit your needs.
